چکیده

Augmented Reality (AR) technology is sufficiently mature, where it is possible to evaluate improvement in human performance. A critical aspect of human performance is individual differences in AR. In the present study, the effect of gender on human performance in a “search and rescue” navigation task is assessed. Six conditions were investigated in the study: Two control conditions (paper map or compass prior to entering the maze), and four experimental conditions (combinations of egocentric and exocentric maps, and a continuouslyon or on-demand map display). 120 subjects equally divided between males and females were tested. Pre and post test questionnaires were administered. GuilfordZimmerman (G-Z) scores indicate that males perform better than females in spatial visualization and orientation tasks. The time for maze traversal for females exceeded that of males by 127 seconds on average for the no map condition. Also, males had better performance in covering the maze.

Comparison of Spatial Knowledge Acquisition with Different Presentation Forms in the Context of GPS-based Pedestrian Navigation

This paper deals with current ongoing efforts to investigate the influence of different presentation forms on spatial knowledge acquisition. The acquisition of spatial knowledge based on map, augmented reality (AR), and language is analyzed and compared in an empirical test for GPS-based pedestrian navigation. This paper describes the hypothesis and the methodology. Also work in progress on int...

Augmented Videos and Panoramas for Pedestrian Navigation

In order to support pedestrians in the tasks of orientation and wayfinding with mobile devices appropriate visualizations of their location, its surrounding, and background information are needed. In this paper we present two complementary concepts for the combination of realistic views and location specific information that can be implemented with current generation PDAs and next generation ce...

Enhancing Handheld Navigation Systems with Augmented Reality

We investigate the role of augmented reality (AR) as a new kind of handheld interface to enhance navigation. We integrate AR with other more common interfaces into a handheld navigation system, and we conduct an exploratory study to see where and how people exploit the AR interface. Based on previous work on augmented photographs, we hypothesize that AR is more useful as a support for wayfindin...

The Gender Factor in Virtual Reality Navigation and Wayfinding

An area of interest that remains to be more thoroughly investigated is that of human navigation and wayfinding in VR. This study attempted to examine the effect of gender on VR navigation and wayfinding. A tool named Virtual Reality Navigation Tool (VRNT) was designed to conduct experiments for this research. Four experiments were conducted to track navigational patterns employed by the subject...
